Charikot Hospital has been managing different cases at such a horrible time of pandemic COVID-19. There are very few pediatric surgeons in Nepal and few hospitals dedicated to those surgeries. Charikot Hospital managed by Nyaya Health Nepal (an NGO established in Dolakha after the earthquake of 2015), has managed 1000 plus pediatric surgeries including hernia, hydrocele, phimosis, undescended testis and pediatric fractures over four and half years said Dr. Binod Dangal, Health Care Director, Nyaya Health Nepal.
Kapil Khadka, 17 years old from Gaurishankar rural municipality-2 Kusal Thami 14 years old from Bhimeshor Municipality-2 and Alish Shrestha 6 years from Bhimeshor municipality-2, all three children presented at Charikot Hospital with similar compliant of groin pain and swelling for many years. “Due to intolerable pain, we visited different health centers but due to COVID-19, many refused to operate”, said by Kusal’s father.
According to Dr. Reena Lamichhane, who is leading COVD-19 response in the hospital, Charikot Hospital has been functioning as COVID-19 level 1 hospital in the district and is managing many COVID suspected and positive cases.
“Their basic problems were indirect hernia and congenital hydrocele, for which they underwent “herniotomy” successfully at Charikot Hospital. We have been managing COVID-19 cases as well but we had to prioritize these surgeries as the condition was intolerable to those children”, said Dr. Dangal. During 5 months of lockdown, Charikot Hospital has managed 500 deliveries, 75 C-sections, 100 other major surgeries, and 14500 OPD patients with free health care.
Dr. Dangal, Dr. Tula Krishna Gupta, DR Santosh Pathak, Dr. Arun Upreti, Nurse Sirjana Shah, and Ramila Karki were involved in the surgeries. “We have been performing pediatric surgeries since 2018 after the training support of Health Partnership Nepal (HPN), a UK Charity organization”, said Dr. Arun Upreti, Medical Officer of Charikot Hospital.
